A horizontal artistic collaboration

The creative process is a moment about engendering faith, some form of engagement, certainty, a need for that kind of work, then.  Piece after piece, I keep finding new forms to an endless questioning about the world. It is in the material itself that I find what I am looking for, without really knowing exactly […]

Brutalis – Biennale nationale de danse du val-de-Marne

Biennale National de danse du Val-de-Marne “Brutalis” un solo six sensibilities Karine Ponties surprises again in a solo work rich in artistic complicities. Karine Ponties possesses above all an extraordinary sense of dialogue in which she engages herself with the public as soon as she gets on stage. The audience reactions are very alive and […]

Catherine Simon, SACD award ceremony (Brutalis)

A bright stain within the black magma: an isolated knee. An angular line within the black magma: her arm, chiselled, her elbow, like an abrupt angle attached to nowhere. A gnarled mass within the back magma: her back, play of muscles, knotted muscles, knotty quivering of muscles beneath the skin. Fascination with this acute consciousness […]

Dame de Pic – Masculin/Féminin: sur quel pied danser?

« Negatovas » KARINE PONTIES Masculin/Feminin : Sur quel pied Danser ? Karine Ponties is dancer and choreographer. I saw her for the first time in a production of Nicole Mossoux and Patrick Bonté, then in one of Nadine’s Ganase. Both interpretations radically different, but I was absolutely enchanted and seduced. Intrigued also. I had […]

Desirabilis – Canada

“Desirabilis Canada” Desirabilis lifts up the theatre curtain showing two couples seemingly coming out of a television contest of the fifties all posing in a hilarious family picture, their faces and their small movements, so fine and fair that the audience can not hold their visible happy laughter. (Translated by Jordi Granados)

Desirabilis – Canada

ìDesirabilis, an absurd quartet by the Belgian Karine Ponties. Two couples -or four friends – form a band of curious, dysfunctional players. We see them sometimes as characters from a comic book and other times as protagonists in a strange, slightly grotesque travelling carnival. They live for love or boredom!

Desirabilis (2004)

Eric Clemens “Karine Ponties, Capture out of crawing”

In her beginnings, at very first sight, Karine Ponties signifies her experiences of loss, of identity refused, of the clash of opposites… and these beginnings recur in each of her choreographies. And yet, on closer inspection, K.P. compresses herself. Starting with Dame de Pic (Queen of Spades, 1997), she gathers her momentum from excessively compressed […]

Everything is a question of translation

“I have the feeling that regardless of its form, writing always comes from the body – hence the need to forge ties by working with individuals, each of whom contains a script. Individual scripts with animal instincts that attempt to translate and thereby re-write existing languages – from sounds, words, gestures, colours; from erupting excesses of the world, from […]

Gérérd Mayen, Carré St-Vincent program 2009/10

“Where is the substance, where is the form? This question is especially pertinent to dance. Does the decor create the substance? Is the presence of humans sufficient to produce the form? Or does the substance come from a neutral presence, where any gestures that occur become the form? Another hypothesis: if mundane gestures nurture the […]

Holeulone (press excerpts)

Holeulone, this is neither an insult nor an abstract word, but a bomb of visual pleasure that bursts in your face, captivates your ear, played out at every moment in every scene. That is to say, one dancer so mingled with the other that one could believe, in the favourable half-light, that they form one […]

In the key of tenderness (material for Brucelles)

(…) Our brain, initially reptilian. For our bodies are also beasts, ancient beasts laden with the timeless memory of genes. (…) These beasts live on tenderness, a tenderness that sometimes flows from our gaze, from masters and mistresses. These are profound beasts, primal beasts. They hold us is space and give us time (…). For […]

Karine Ponties seen by Marie Baudet

What do I find, what do I perceive in this body of work that I have been following – faithfully albeit intermittently – for more than twenty years? A body of work, an artist (and her teammates who have come, gone, and remained year after year), a gaze that sharpens our own. Assertions, attempts, also […]

Karine Ponties seen by Nathalie Huerta

When I discovered Karine’s work, I was surprised by the energy and strength of her choreo- graphic language, the physical commitment of her performers, her vision of the world, which is terrible, yet tender, full of humor and with a hint of exhilarating folly. Then I met the artist, the woman, this French who lived […]
